ABSTRACT
A controlled trial of the drug benactyzine was carried out on 26 patients suffering from Anxiety Neurosis, using a rating scale for 13 symptoms (variables). The relations between the variables show that they may be effectively replaced by three independent index numbers or factors. Replacing the thirteen measures for each patient by three factor measurements, the improvement occurring in each patient was then calculated. On comparing the mean improvement produced by benactyzine and that occurring in the controls, statistical tests show that this difference is highly significant in the case of the third factor. The implications of this are discussed.
