The Relationship between Glucose Tolerance, Body Weight, and Clinical State in Melancholia

I. G. Pryce, B.Sc., M.B., B.S., D.P.M., Research Registrar

Runwell Hospital, Wickford, Essex

ABSTRACT

G.T., body weight and emotional state were observed before and after treatment in 20 subjects admitted to a mental hospital because of depression. No correlation was observed between change in G.T. after treatment and either change in weight, or change in emotional state. The significance of these findings isdiscussed, and in particular it is shown that decreased G.T. indepression cannot be due to current emotional disturbance. An alternative theory is suggested.
