ABSTRACT

The hypothesis that excess brain 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) will reduce the psychological effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) has been tested and confirmed, using psychological tests for measurement. Normal subjects were given LSD on two occasions, the LSD being preceded on one occasion by 5-hydroxytryptophan (5HTP) and on the other by placebo. Urinary 5-hydroxyindole partition studies were used to demonstrate that 5HTP was being metabolized throughout the experimental period ; a characteristic pattern is described.
