A Clinical and Metabolic Study of Acute Intoxication with Cannabis Sativa and Its Role in the Model Psychoses

ABSTRACT

  1. A clinical and metabolic study of acute intoxication with Cannabis sativa has been made. Special attention has been paid to its role as a research tool in the model psychoses.
  2. The general history of the drug has been briefly reviewed.
  3. The history of the drug habit in South Africa has been described.
  4. Experimental work comprised the
    1. Administration of a single oral dose of Cannabis saliva to 10 medical volunteers and the observation of
      1. Subjective experiences and behaviour;
      2. Clinical changes;
      3. Special investigations, e.g. blood-sugar estimations, urine output, electroencephalographic tracings.

    2. The administration of a second oral dose of Cannabis saliva to 3 of the 10 subjects.
    3. The administration of the drug to the writer.
    4. The administration of an overdose to one subject.
    5. Interviews with four male cannabis addicts.

  5. The implications of the experimental work have been discussed.
