ABSTRACT
Results of management of schizophrenic in-patients at the Sarawak Mental Hospital are presented for 1959. Treatment is by psychotherapy (mental nursing) together with the combination of chlorpromazine plus E.C.T. The chronicity-rate after 10 months is 12·02 per cent. and the re-admission rate 29 per cent. The total number of patients in the hospital has been reduced by 22 per cent. despite an increase in the admission rate by 221 per cent. (338) as compared with the four previous years and accordingly the discharges from the hospital have increased by 271 per cent. The hospital caters for a population of three-quarters of a million and has approximately 350 beds. The area it serves is of the size of Great Britain.
