Group Resort to Phantasy

A Field Study

G. R. Peberdy, M.D., D.P.M., Psychiatrist

Newcastle General Hospital, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

ABSTRACT

  1. An investigation within a community of adults of play with two imagined "animals" is described.
  2. The spread of these phantasies was shown to be determined by group effects, some groups being "acceptive" and others "rejective". The group psychodynamics are discussed.
  3. The emotional forces determining the emergence and distribution of this play are indicated.
  4. The concepts of the phantasied "animals" as held by various individuals are given. Their relevance to the psychodynamics of affected individuals is discussed.
