A case of cardiac arrest, with apnoea, following E.C.T. is reported. The probable mechanism is discussed and current technique reviewed. It is unwise to give repeated shocks to patients with cardiac arrhythmias, since summated vagal stimulation introduces a special liability to cardiac arrest in these patients.
