This study reports the results of a trial of amitriptyline and imipramine in depressed female patients. A specific finding was that both drugs were effective, and equally effective. These findings are compared and contrasted with a previous study by Hordern, Holt, Burt and Gordon (1963). Differences are explained by the criteria of case selection and drug dosage in the two studies. A more fundamental principle is to illustrate the importance of adequate, specific information and methodology in reporting drug treatment studies so that contrasts and comparisons such as these can be made.
