1. The short form of the Maudsley Personality Inventory was administered to the 1,857 adult members of a random 1 in 10 sample of families in two districts of a large town. The non-responding rate was 4.9 per cent.
2. Both for extraversion and neuroticism the scores varied significantly with age and with sex. The association with social class was less definite. There was no appreciable correlation between neuroticism and extraversion scores.
3. For neuroticism the scores did not conform closely to a normal distribution.
4. The short M.P.I. was re-administered to 239 adults in a random sub-sample of the families. The test-retest correlations were 0.6 for extraversion and 0.7 for neuroticism.
5. These findings are discussed in the light of previous studies.
