Validation of an Inventory for Measuring Depression

MARYSE METCALFE Dip.Psych.1 and ELLEN GOLDMAN B.A.

1 Neuropsychiatric Research Unit, Medical Research Council, Carshalton, and West Park Hospital, Epsom, Surrey

In our experience the D.I. has proved a simple and satisfactory method of assessing the level of depression in patients suffering from depressive illness. The results of our study agree with those of the original validation carried out in America. The administration of the inventory makes little demand on the time of skilled staff, its scoring is simple and it is not sensitive to doctors' and nurses' bias or influence. The D.I. should enable weekly assessments of mental state to be made on depressed patients under different doctors or in different hospitals with comparable results, and should provide a numerical score which could be compared with other quantitative data.
