The Application of Learning Theory to the Treatment of Traffic Phobia

The case history of this patient demonstrates fear reactions induced by two road accidents. Since the stimuli responsible for the patient's fear reactions were specifiable, it was felt that behaviour therapy was the most suitable form of treatment. With the aid of hypnosis to induce a state of relaxation, Wolpe's (1958) method of systematic desensitization was employed. Treatment was continued for a period of 3 months (22 desensitization sessions). A follow-up of 6 months has shown that the patient remains symptom-free.
