The present status of tranquillizers, antidepressants and other somatic treatments in psychiatric illnesses during pregnancy and their foetal effects, is set out. The findings of animal experimentation are often at variance with those found in man.
The opinion of Johannesburg obstetricians and psychiatric institutions is given.
Possible theoretical implications with regard to psychiatric treatment and illness in man are mentioned.
