A controlled clinical trial of prothipendyl (Tolnate) over a period of 16 weeks was undertaken in order to assess its effects on a group of 40 mentally subnormal male and female hospital patients who also suffered from severe behaviour disorders, including some patients with a psychotic overlay. The I.Q. range of the group was from < 19 to 58 on the Goodenough Draw-a-Man test.

The results, evaluated both clinically and statistically, showed a significant improvement in those who received the drug.

There were no side effects of any note.
