Amitriptyline and Perphenazine in Depressive Illness A Controlled Trial

1 Registrar, St. Francis and Hurstwood Park Hospitals, Haywards Heath, Sussex

A "double-blind" trial of Triptafen (amitriptyline hydrochloride 25 mg.+perphenazine 2 mg.) was carried out in 129 patients with depressive illness. After three weeks' treatment, 79 per cent. of patients receiving Triptafen were improved or greatly improved as compared with 30 per cent. receiving placebo. The combination seems to be most useful in depressive illnesses with marked anxiety and agitation.
