The M.M.P.I. profiles of 92 consecutive depressed admission patients were analysed according to the presence or absence of parental bereavement in childhood. The parentally bereaved group showed higher scores in the psychotic tetrad. In the childhood bereaved group the mean scores on the basic scales of those who had lost their mother were uniformly (except for the Mf scale) and significantly higher than the mean scores for those who had lost their father.
