1 University of Edinburgh Department of Psychiatry, Morningside Park, Edinburgh, 10

Nitrazepam (Mogadon), a non-barbiturate hypnotic, was investigated in 102 patients from the psycho-geriatric unit of Severalls Hospital, Colchester, Essex. The induction, duration, quality of sleep and nature of side-effects were compared with those of sodium amylobarbitone and a placebo. Results are reported. Nurses' observations supplemented and were usually consistent with patients' impressions. The results show that nitrazepam 10 mg. and sodium amylobarbitone 200 mg. were of comparable effects and were significantly better than the placebo.

It is concluded that nitrazepam is a reliable, safe non-barbiturate hypnotic for elderly psychiatric patients.
