Sleep Patterns During Afternoon Naps in the Young and Elderly

S. A. LEWIS B.Sc.1

1 Research Psychologist, Sleep Laboratory, University Department of Psychiatry, Morningside Park, Edinburgh, 10

A study of afternoon nap sleep was carried out using a group of young adult and elderly subjects. The elderly subjects had a shorter sleep time and fewer periods of wakefulness than the young subjects, who had more frequent interruptions of their sleep. The insomnia experienced by the elderly is not compensated for by afternoon naps.

The work was carried out while the author was a Medical Research Council Scholar.
