Two brief surveys of psychiatric illness in a small Ethiopian town have been made. Five hundred consecutive patients attending a health-centre for medical consultation were examined also for evidence of psychiatric abnormality and to collect sociological data. All those living in 100 houses selected at random were likewise examined. The two surveys agreed in showing a high incidence of psychoneurosis and personality disorder in rural Ethiopia. The significance of this, and the general problems of assessing the incidence of psychiatric disorder in a community are discussed.
