The Association of Childhood Bereavement with Suicidal Attempt in Depressive Illness

OSCAR W. HILL B.A., M.B., M.R.C.P., D.P.M.1

1 Senior Lecturer, Academic Department of Psychiatry, The Middlesex Hospital, London, W.1.

In a group of 1,483 depressed in-patients, a study has been made of the relationship between death of a parent in childhood and a subsequent attempted suicide in adult life.

Suicide is significantly more common in depressed women who lost their fathers when aged 10 to 14 and, to a lesser extent, at 15 to 19. Men and women whose mothers died in the first ten years of life also tended to attempt suicide more often.

The possible implications of these findings are discussed.
