Mean parental ages at birth of 291 males admitted to the Bethlem Royal and Maudsley Hospitals between 1 January 1949 and 31 December 1960 diagnosed as suffering from "320.6 pathological personality, sexual deviation, homosexuality" were calculated. The mean maternal age was compared with the expected value derived from the general population data after fully accounting for the steady decline in mean maternal age during this century. It was found to be higher than the expected value. A significantly higher paternal age was also found. The high maternal age was found to be secondary to the shift in the paternal age. These observations, accordingly, provide no support for any hypothesis that a cause of male homosexuality may be found in a biological factor related to the mother's age, e.g. by causing a chromosomal abnormality.
