The Contraceptive Pill, Side Effects and Personality: Report of a Controlled Double Blind Trial

A double blind controlled trial of a contraceptive and an inert pill is described which studied the relationship between side effects reported weekly to a general practitioner and questionnaire-assessed neuroticism. Significantly more symptoms were complained of by women on the active tablet and these were less in the second month of the trial. No relationship was found between the presence of these symptoms and the degree of neuroticism in patients on the active tablet.
