Plasma free fatty acids (plasma-FFA), blood glucose, and pulse rate before and after an intravenous insulin dose, standardized according to body weight, were investigated in 28 male patients in a mental hospital: 14 patients were diagnosed acute schizophrenia and 14 were non-psychotic patients. The two groups were compared both unmatched and matched for age, weight and duration of hospitalization prior to study.
The psychotic patients generally showed higher FFA-values than the non-psychotics, and their heart rate was found to be higher at the beginning of the experiment.
The schizophrenics tended to react to insulin with less hypoglycaemia.
It seems reasonable to suppose that increased activity in the autonomic nervous system in the schizophrenics is at least one basis for their increased FFA-levels.
