1 Consultant Psychiatrist, Bolton District General Hospital, Farnworth, Bolton, Lancs.
Seventeen patients whose presenting complaint was dysmorphophobia were studied. They were found to be severely psychologically disturbed as a group and five were psychotic. Dysmorphophobia was found to be non-specific as a symptom but was shown to be a complaint prone to occur in patients of a particular personality type (sensitive and/or insecure, using Schneider's terminology).
