Ten members of a family known or believed to have familial hyperparathyroidism (HPT) were compared with ten randomly chosen individuals from the same family without evidence of HPT. Eight members of the HPT group had experienced major psychiatric symptoms, requiring in three instances psychiatric hospitalization. One member of the non-HPT group had suffered a psychiatric disorder. The association of psychiatric symptoms with HPT was statistically significant, although the basis for the association was unclear.
