The Influence of Parental Death Anniversaries upon Suicide Dates

J. BUNCH M.A., A.A.P.S.W.1 and B. BARRACLOUGH M.B., M.R.A.C.P., D.P.M.1

1 Medical Research Council Clinical Psychiatry Unit, Graylingwell Hospital, Chichester, Sussex

The hypothesis was tested that more than the expected number of suicides kill themselves in a time period near to the anniversary of a parent's death. This was found to be true for fathers' anniversaries, but not for mothers'. When the influence of seasonal variation in mortality was considered the result remained significant. More daughters than sons killed themselves near in time to a parental death anniversary.
