A comparison has been made between psychiatric referrals from the general wards over a recent period of one year and a five-year period from 1955-60. The findings are as follows:
(1) There has been a vast increase in suicidal attempts.
(2) Referrals have doubled and therefore the amount of work has doubled.
(3) If suicidal attempts are excluded there has been very little change in the pattern of referrals.
