Michele Tansella (pictured) is Professor of Psychiatry, Head of the Department of Mental Health, and is Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health and Service Evaluation at the University of Verona. Graham Thornicroft is a consultant psychiatrist, and Director of Research and Development at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, and Professor of Community Psychiatry at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London.

This editorial summarises what is known about accelerating the transfer of discoveries in the health sciences into implementation in routine clinical practice. Three phases are described: adoption in principle, early implementation, and persistence of implementation. Facilitators and barriers to the implementation across these phases are discussed.
