Abstract

A new short self-rating scale of psychoneurotic symptoms and traits is described and has been validated against conventional clinical diagnostic categories.

The test (Middlesex Hospital Questionnaire) consists of six sub-tests designed to measure free-floating anxiety, phobic anxiety, obsessive-compulsive traits and symptoms, somatic symptoms, depressive symptoms, and hysterical traits and symptoms.

Preliminary standardization suggests that the test is sufficiently promising to be used in a busy clinic or as a research tool.
