In 1872 Wm. Ireland, of Scotland, attempted a classification of mental deficiency based on pathological conditions. His twelve group's were: Genetous, Microcephalic, Hydrocephalic, Eclampsic, Epileptic, Paralytic, Traumatic, Inflammatory, Sclerotic, Syphilitic, Cretinous and Deprivative.
